I started young. It was my mom who got me hooked. We were living in Toms River, NJ at the time. I was in kindergarten or first grade. It was a rainy day and I was starting to get the childish cabin fever that comes with that sort of situation. So my mom got me all bundled up in my raincoat and my bright rubber rain boots. And then she took me out to our driveway…
…and then she put a big piece of bubble wrap down into a good-sized puddle and told me to jump up and down on it.
Bliss! I remember vividly stomping and jumping and splashing until I was good and sure that every single big bubble in that piece of plastic was resoundingly popped. It wasn’t until i got a bit older and had bigger hands that Mom showed me how to twist up a piece of mini-bubble bubble wrap and then wring it so as to get popcorn-style popping action.
What is it about bubble wrap and popping it that makes so many people love it so much?
Tiny Bubbles….
Bubble wrap first came into being in January of 1960, courtesy of the Sealed Air Corporation, which means that it is now 50 years old! Those small chambers of air are a really effective and lightweight way to offer packaging and protection to all sorts of stuff.
In my house, we have an area where we put boxes and packing stuff to be reused and recycled, and there’s always some bubble wrap on hand. You can shape and mold it to cover just about anything and a few bits of tape are all that you need to keep everything in place.

But how did this versatile material become a favorite for popping? Some people say it relieves stress to crunch it up, while others think it’s just plain fun. Is it because we don’t have to blow up all those tiny bubbles? Popping bubble wrap produces a lot more pops than a balloon, and a lot of people who are frightened by popping balloons have absolutely no hesitations or fears from bubble wrap.
